Tip Calculator

Work out the tip, the total and what each person owes, with an option to round up.

How to calculate a tip

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100. For an $86.40 bill at 18%: 86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55, for a total of $101.95. Split three ways, each person pays $33.98.

If you want to tip on the amount before tax, enter the tax shown on the receipt and the calculator works out the tip on the bill minus tax.

Quick tipping shortcuts

  • 20%: find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. 10% of $86.40 is $8.64, so 20% is about $17.30.
  • 15%: 10% plus half of that again: $8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96.
  • Double the tax: in places with roughly 8% to 9% sales tax, doubling the tax gives a tip of about 16% to 18%.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% of the bill for table service is standard, with 20% now common for good service. For a $60 meal that is $9 to $12.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides say the pre-tax amount is fine, since tax isn't part of the service. Many people tip on the total because it is simpler; the difference is small, about $1 on a $100 bill at 20%.

How much do you tip for delivery, haircuts and taxis?

Common US norms: food delivery 15% to 20% (at least $3 to $5), hair stylists 15% to 20%, taxi and rideshare drivers 15% to 20%, bartenders $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab.
