Discount Calculator

Work out the sale price, how much you save, and the true discount when one discount is stacked on another.

Discount formulas

  • Savings = Price × Discount % ÷ 100
  • Sale price = Price × (1 − Discount %)
  • Stacked discounts: Price × (1 − D1) × (1 − D2). The combined discount is 1 − (1 − D1)(1 − D2).
  • Original price = Sale price ÷ (1 − Discount %)

Example: 30% off, then an extra 20% off

A $100 jacket is marked 30% off, so it is $70. A coupon for an extra 20% off takes 20% of $70, which is $14, so you pay $56. Your total saving is $44, a 44% discount, not the 50% it sounds like. The order doesn't matter: 20% off then 30% off also gives $56.

Is it really a deal?

  • Check the price history; some stores raise the "original" price before a sale.
  • Compare the price per unit for multi-packs with the unit price calculator.
  • "Buy one, get one 50% off" is a 25% discount on two items, not 50%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract. 25% off $80 saves $20, so the sale price is $60.

Is 30% off plus an extra 20% off the same as 50% off?

No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price. $100 at 30% off is $70; another 20% off takes $14, leaving $56. That is a 44% total discount, not 50%.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A $60 item marked 25% off was originally 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
