Time Card Calculator
Enter your start time, end time and unpaid break for each day. We'll total your hours for the week, split out overtime and work out your gross pay.
How to total a time card
- For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time.
- Take off unpaid breaks such as a lunch break.
- Convert to decimal hours: divide the minutes by 60.
- Add the days together. Hours above 40 in the week are overtime for most hourly workers.
Example
Working 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8 hours a day, or 40 hours a week. At $20 an hour that is $800 gross. Stay until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and the week becomes 42 hours: 40 regular hours plus 2 overtime hours at $30, or $860.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time and take off unpaid breaks. 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. is 8.5 hours; minus a 30-minute lunch it is 8 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes 0.5, 45 minutes 0.75. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
What if a shift goes past midnight?
Enter the times as normal. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ended the next day, so 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. counts as 8 hours.
Are breaks paid?
Under federal rules, short breaks of 5 to 20 minutes must be paid, but bona fide meal breaks of 30 minutes or more where you are fully relieved of duty can be unpaid. Some states have their own break laws.
